The IELTS examination seeks to test all the four language skills of the examinees i.e., listening, reading, writing and speaking. Scores ranging from 0 to 9 (known as band-scores) are awarded in each one of these sub-tests or modules, and an overall band-score, which is the average of all these individual scores, is also awarded. The main examination (consisting of listening, reading and writing) is of a paper-and-pencil mode and the speaking examination is a one-to-one interview with an accredited examiner. Generally the entire examination is written using a pencil. IELTS is not conducted on an online mode. Due to logistical reasons, the speaking module is normally scheduled one day earlier or later as compared to the main examination. For this reason, the candidate may have to stay at the test center for at least 2 days. The examination fee is approximately Rs. 8900/- at present. There are no provisions for compartmental appearance in the IELTS test. The band scores required to be achieved by the prospective student or immigrant have to be achieved in one sitting.
