The IELTS exam is an international examination with students appearing from all over the world, and so, a certain standard is maintained. Going by Indian standards, IELTS is an expensive examination, the current exam fee being around Rs. 8900/- No compartmental appearance for the examination is permitted, and each time the candidate has to appear for all the four modules. Moreover, a person aspiring to study or work in an English speaking country should work towards a working knowledge of the English language, in his/her own interest. Keeping all this in mind, we would not advise students to appear for the examination, unless they have a reasonable proficiency in English. It is a fact that many doctors and nurses achieve the band score of 7 that is needed for health professionals only after repeated attempts. As mentioned above, the IELTS exam tests all the four skills, i.e., listening, reading, writing and speaking. A student who intends to appear for the IELTS examination should consciously improve all these skills. This is especially true of students whose first language is not English. As per the research done by IELTS authorities, just 1 band-score improvement in IELTS scores needs around 400 hours of formal English instruction. Hence we would not advise students to appear for the examination without sufficient practice and study. Normally IELTS results are valid for 2 years only.
